With the full liberalization of the Austrian electricity market on 1 October 2001, and the introduction of the balance group model, the framework conditions for the establishment of an electricity exchange were completed. On 19 March 2002, everything was ready: The first day of trading on EXAA was successfully closed.
Today, EXAA has become established as a European market for energy products. It was launched with 12 market participants, and at present, EXAA spot trading includes more than 65 electricity traders from over 14 countries on the Energy Spot Market.
In addition to the classical tasks relating to exchange trading, EXAA is also responsible for the settlement of financial transactions (clearing) and assumes the counterparty risk for all trades executed.
Over the years, the trading territory and tasks have been steadily enlarged:
| June 2004 | Opening of the transpower (former: E.ON) control area |
| May 2005 | Opening of the Amprion (former: RWE) control area |
| June 2005 | Start of trading in CO2 certificates |
| Dec. 2006 | Opening of the control area Switzerland |
| 2006 | Establishment of two market makers for the electricity spot market |
| 2002 - 2006 | Auction Office for capacity auctions
(is now operated by riecado, a member of the Cismo group) |
| 2007 | The maximum size of block products was increased from 200 MW to 500 MW |
| 2008 | Change of the algorithm to a more reliable execution rate of Market Orders |
| Dec. 2009 | Opening of the EnBW and Vattenfall control areas |
| May 2010 | EXAA is taking over the operation of
the Hungarian market area of Prague's Energy Exchange PXE |
In the summer of 2005, another milestone in the development and establishment of the Austrian electricity market was achieved with the integration of the EXAA Energy Exchange Austria into the Cismo Group, which owns many service companies from the Austrian energy industry.
In June 2006, EXAA moved to the joint headquarters at Palais Liechtenstein in Vienna’s district of Alsergrund, and now has the advantage of being able to tap the know-how of the entire group for new projects and challenges.
